Kenaf clean-up: Countering oil spills in the Niger Delta

Welcome to the team on countering oil spills in the Niger Delta!

The countering oil spills project is one of the winning projects of the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund under the auspices of the office of alumni of the United States Department of State.

We are a group of 16 team members who are alumni of the United States,  and 11 volunteers, highly motivated to serve humanity.

Mission

“To be foremost in community integration and use of local plants for oil spill clean-up in Nigeria’s Niger Delta by developing sustainable strategies that are prompt and acceptable to stakeholders with no threat to the environment”



Our Vision

“To proffer means which are environmentally safe and acceptable to stakeholders toward an enabling environment clean of oil spills using kenaf”

The Objectives are:
1). Collect and characterize kenaf germplasm diversity from kenaf-producing agro ecologies in Nigeria;

2). Conserve kenaf germplasm diversity in a seed bank;

3). Bring together stakeholders in kenaf production/utilization in utilization fair;

4). Demonstrate the use of kenaf core in cleaning oil spills to stakeholders on oil spillage and kenaf production/utilization;

 5). Develop community-integrated, stakeholder-based strategy for cleaning the polluted land and water in the Niger Delta region using kenaf core.
